The Gozo Confederation for Agriculture and Fisheries (GCAF) wishes to draw the attention of Gozitan beekeepers and other interested agricultural stakeholders to an upcoming workshop on Oriental Hornet (Vespa orientalis) awareness and management.
The workshop, organised by the Foundation for the Conservation of the Maltese Honey Bee, will be held on Saturday, 29 August 2026, from 9:00am to 12:00pm at the Valletta Design Cluster. Online participation will also be available, providing an opportunity for beekeepers and stakeholders in Gozo to take part remotely.
The Oriental Hornet represents a growing concern for beekeepers due to its predation on honey bees and the pressure it can place on bee colonies. Effective monitoring and management are therefore important not only for the beekeeping sector but also for the protection of pollinators and the wider agricultural environment.
The workshop will provide information on the Oriental Hornet, its interaction with the Maltese Honey Bee, and practical approaches to awareness, monitoring and management.
GCAF encourages Gozitan beekeepers, farmers and other interested stakeholders to participate and remain informed about measures that can help protect local bee populations.
Protecting pollinators is particularly important for Gozo, where agriculture, biodiversity and the rural landscape are closely interconnected.
