Consultation – Veterinary Surgeons Profession

The Gozo Confederation for Agriculture and Fisheries (GCAF) wishes to inform farmers, livestock breeders and other stakeholders that the Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Supply has opened a public consultation on the Draft Regulations for the Registration and Warranting of the Veterinary Surgeons Profession.

The proposed Veterinary Surgeons Profession (Registration and Warranting) Regulations, 2026 aim to update and strengthen the regulatory framework governing veterinary surgeons in Malta.

What the Proposed Regulations Cover

Among other matters, the proposed regulations address:

  • Registration and warranting requirements for veterinary surgeons;
  • Recognition of professional qualifications;
  • Temporary or occasional veterinary services by professionals established in other EU Member States;
  • Professional liability insurance;
  • Continuing Professional Development (CPD);
  • Professional development requirements for newly qualified veterinary surgeons;
  • Activities reserved exclusively for authorised veterinary surgeons;
  • Registration and renewal fees; and
  • Enforcement and penalties relating to unauthorised veterinary practice.

GCAF Encourages Stakeholder Participation

Veterinary services are of direct importance to Gozo’s livestock and agricultural sectors. GCAF therefore encourages farmers, livestock breeders, veterinarians and other affected stakeholders to review the proposed regulations and submit their views.

GCAF is also reviewing the proposed regulations from the perspective of Gozo’s farming and livestock community and will submit its own feedback as part of the consultation process.

Consultation closes: 7 September 2026
